Here are some busted myths surrounding hair transplant:

  • Hair transplant is just for men: Due to widespread term male pattern baldness people often have doubt that hair transplant can only be performed in males. But the reality is androgenic alopecia can occur both in males and females. Hair transplant with either technique can be performed in both males and females with the same procedure.
  • Hair transplant could prevent further hair loss: Hair transplant surgery is a procedure which involves the transfer of hair follicles from the donor area to the recipient area. This procedure is intended to restore hairs at the bald area but cannot control the further progression of hair loss from other areas of scalp.
  • Hair transplant provides immediate hairs on the bald scalp: The transplanted hairs during hair transplant undergoes the same hair growth cycle as normal existing hair. Once the hair is transplanted the hair growth is followed by initial shedding of all the newly transplanted hair which takes approximately 6-8 months for new hairs to be visible on the scalp. The best growth after hair transplant is seen in 9-12 months.
  • Hair transplant is not for older people: Ideally hair transplant has nothing to do with age and only depends upon the donor supply of hairs. If the donor supply is good and the patient is a good candidate for hair transplants this procedure can be a hair loss solution for anyone irrespective of age.
  • Hair transplant is a procedure of planting either artificial hairs or someone else’s hairs: Hair transplant solely involves your own hairs and is just replacement of these hairs from one location to other. There is nothing to do with artificial hairs or someone else’s hairs. Hairs if taken from others would lead to rejection as our immune system would not allow such things to happen unless immunosuppresants are prescribed. FDA has allowed immunosuppressants only for major organ transplant and not hair transplant.
  • Hair transplant can bring back your lost hairs: Hair transplant is solely a restoration procedure and not regenerative procedure. It can cover your bald area using hairs from other parts of body or other section of scalp. Nothing till now can regenerate once lost hair follicles. Hoping for the technology to reach us one day when we can do this as well but for now it is not true and just a myth.
  • Hair transplant is unsafe and adversely affects your brain and head: People opting for hair transplant often had been suggested to not get it done as the myth prevails regarding adverse effects on head and brain following hair transplant. The good news is our scalp have 5 thick layers and hair transplant includes only the most superficial layer which makes it very safe if performed by qualified and experienced surgeons. There are only few minor complications following hair transplant like mild swelling, minimal pain and itching of scalp which can be easily managed.
  • Hair transplant is a painful procedure: It has been presented as a painful procedure which is normally not true, every transplant procedure is performed under anaesthesia and so is hair transplant. Yes, after the procedure for few days it could be bit discomforting which will be easily managed for sure. In fact people can resume their work from the next day.
  • Hair transplant will look like wig and would not look natural: This is a very subjective myth which can or cannot be true. Ideally the procedure is not at fault but the inexperience surgeons are. People opting for qualified, experienced and expert surgeons always gets natural results but the results offered by inexperienced surgeons or technicians could be dicey. Hence, it is of utmost importance to choose the right surgeon and clinic for your hair transplant.
