TENURE-TRACK ESL/BILINGUAL EDUCATION FACULTY

The Department of Education at Elmhurst College in the greater Chicago area invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in ESL/Bilingual Education to begin in the fall of 2020. Responsibilities include teaching a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in ESL/Bilingual education, maintaining a record of scholarly presentations and writings, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and collaborating with school partners and teacher education program directors.bilingual teacher qualification

Essential Functions
•Teach six courses in second language acquisition methods leading to P-12 state endorsements in English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education.
•Maintain an active and visible program of scholarship including presentations and publications.
•Participate in service within the department, college, university, community, state, and professional organizations.
•Advise undergraduate and graduate students.
•Serve as a thesis advisor for graduate students who focus on ESL/bilingual projects.
•Participate in school, community and university collaborations.
•Foster collaborative partnerships with local schools and districts with ESL/Bilingual programs.
•Coordinate field experience requirements for the ESL/bilingual endorsement course work.
•Foster the development of teacher leaders in ESL and Bilingual Education.
•Pursue an external funding agenda.

Minimum Qualifications
•Earned doctorate in Teacher Education or a closely related area with an emphasis on Second Language Learning and/or Bilingual Education.
•Demonstrated strong teaching skills at the college level for contributing to undergraduate and graduate programs. Ability to teach a variety of courses leading to endorsements for bilingual and/or ESL teachers including methods and materials, assessment, theoretical foundations, and linguistics.
•At least three years of contemporary experience as a licensed teacher working with EL/bilingual students in accredited P-12 U.S. public schools.
•Demonstrated scholarship in the area of English as a Second Language or bilingualism/bi-literacy.

Preferred Qualifications
•Ability to communicate fluently in two or more languages.
•Experience working with EL/bilingual students receiving special education services.
•Supervision of students in community-based and/or school-based practica settings.
•Collaboration in the development of innovative undergraduate and graduate programs, including courses delivered online.
•Understanding of and interest in teaching about public policies and laws essential to supporting teacher candidates in advocating for language learners in P-12 schools.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move object.

The Department of Education is a member of AACTE and offers 14 undergraduate and 4 graduate programs and advanced endorsement programs in ESL and Bilingual education. The education programs are accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education. The College’s enrollments total approximately 3,000 students of which approximately 300 are pursuing studies in education.
