TEETH SEALANT: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Once born, permanent teeth should last a lifetime; This requires both satisfactory oral care and regular dental appointments. However, you may still need additional treatments to protect your teeth. One of these treatments is the application of dental sealants, mainly applied to teeth of children who are at high risk of caries.

What is a dental sealant?
Dental sealant is a thin coating of resin applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth, especially in molars and premolars. These sealants are usually white or transparent and are not visible during activities such as conversation.

What is the purpose?
Dentists typically recommend sealants as a way to protect teeth from bacteria that contribute to tooth decay. Most of the time, the sealant is applied shortly after tooth eruption, usually between six and twelve years. However, sealants can also be used on older children and even adults if their teeth have very deep grooves that could increase the risk of tooth decay. The dentist can help you decide on the right time to get the treatment.

How is the sealant applied?
Dental sealant placement is usually painless and does not require the use of a drill or anesthetic medication. First, the dentist will clean the tooth surface to remove plaque and food debris with a professional prophylactic paste and a rotating rubber bowl. The practitioner will then isolate the tooth and then apply phosphoric acid to roughen the tooth surface. At this point in the process the tooth will look like limestone. The practitioner will then apply the dental sealant material to the tooth surface, following the manufacturer's instructions for this application. If he is using photoactivated sealant material, he will need an ultraviolet light to harden (polymerize), which takes about 30 seconds.

Finally, the dentist will evaluate the sealant and make sure it is not high.
