Diabetes And Other NCDs’ Risk For Kids In Odisha

Posted by Indiafirst ePaper on October 11th, 2019

The most recent Odisha News that’s making the headlines is that kids, irrespective of their age or their location, are prone to several NCDs or Non-Communicable Diseases. These were supposed to affect the elderly or even adults until a few decades ago.

Whenever we think of Odisha, the first thing that comes into our mind is sports and physical activity. Being an agriculturally led society, Odisha has a massive chunk of its population that still takes part in a considerable amount of physical activity.

This is the situation when it comes to Rural and Semi-rural living conditions. We all know that the Urban lifestyle, not only in Odisha but in the entire world is deteriorating when it comes to physical fitness and the urge to workout.

However, the results showed an incredible thing. Over the last decade or so, children of any age group, from infants to 18, are suffering from NCDs or Non-Communicable Diseases. These diseases are:

  • Diabetes

  • Hypertension

  • Heart Diseases

  • Chronic Kidney Diseases etc.

As you can see, some of these diseases are hereditary as well as acquired. It is not necessary to have these diseases straight from your parents or grandparents. Multiple other factors are also involved when it comes to Diabetes.

The focus is mostly on the sweet yet deadly situation. These kids and adolescents are having considerably high rates of Fasting Blood Sugar levels when tests are conducted. It is not exactly a surprise right now, but it definitely is an alarm bell.

The alarm bell has begun a solid decade ago. People are not able to hear it, neither are the authorities. There is no real way out unless people are actually motivated or motivate themselves to get out of their comfort zone and do some workout.

It is speculated that these kids and adolescents will be provided with considerable awareness programs from their schools, colleges as well as mass media outlets. It will be impressive to see whether they are able to make the much-needed change to their lifestyles and make use of whatever good opportunities that they are getting in the avenue of physical fitness.
