A low-carb diet (Atkins diet) is also known as “Ketogenic diet”.  In this diet, you get more calories from protein than from carbohydrates. In this diet, one cut down carbs like white bread, cakes & pastries, and sugar.

How Does It work?

When you consume fewer carbs in a day(less than 50gms), your body, in the end, comes up short on blood sugar. This takes 3 to 4 days of time. At that point, you'll begin to separate protein and fat for vitality, which will help you get fit. This is called ketosis. Remember ketogenic diet is a transient eating routine that is focussed on weight reduction instead of health benefit or fit body.

In this diet, as calories decreases you’ll notice losing water weight within a few weeks after starting. This process is so quick that you will feel dropping 10-12pounds or maybe more weight, in a month.

Who chooses to follow this diet?

Although people mainly looking for weight reduction choose to follow a Ketogenic diet, however, it also helps in improving medication condition in cases like Epilepsy, heart disease, brain disease, acne etc.

It’s always advisable to consult your doctor first if you are diabetic or under any medication.

How to keep a check on Carbs?

-  Eat as much as possible, low-veg carbs like Avocadoes, Zucchini, and Cucumber etc, with every meal.

-  Increase intake of high-carb veggies like Broccoli, Sprouts, Cabbage and Cauliflower.

-  Add keto-friendly fruits in your diet like watermelon and berries.

-  Eat high-fat proteins like Eggs, Green salad, Avocado, Salmon etc.

Why not losing weight even after following a Ketogenic diet?

-  In Ketosis state, your body burns fat rather than carbs for fuel.

-  Fat has more calories than carbs or protein. You may be eating more calories in a Keto diet than consuming in regular food.

-  Your digestion has gone down because of consuming fewer calories than your body needs.

-  Maybe you are eating too much or too less protein which is not good for a Keto diet. Lack of protein leads to muscle loss.

-  Maybe you are eating something which is not for your body type as this causes allergies and sometimes even responsible for weight gain.

-  Maybe you are snacking on dairy and nuts & this may kick you out from a state of ketosis.

-  You may have Thyroid, Water retention of some other disease because of which you are not losing weight.

How to get maximum benefits from a Ketogenic diet?

  1. Can try Intermittent Fasting for a fast result – Although intermittent fasting has nothing to do with Ketogenic diet plan but it may help to create ketones in body & may accelerate weight loss.  This happens because intermittent fasting may drain reserve glucose from your body.
  2. Keep a check on Fat intake – Choose foods which are rich in saturated fat or polyunsaturated fat like Avocadoes, Fatty fish, MCT Oil, and pasture-raised eggs.
  3. Avoid Vegetable oil, fried food, and processed or packed food.

Side effects

People who choose to follow Keto diet may face some side effects like – headache, stomach problem of low energy level.

Many people are opting for either a Ketogenic diet plan or some other diet plan but there are some diet tables also available in the market i.e Pure Garcinia Cambogia, which also help in weight loss without any side effects.

To summarize, although the Ketogenic diet is very effective for weight loss depending upon the body condition. Hence it’s very important to consult with a doctor before following any kind of diet plan.
