Humans have always envied a bird’s ability to take flight right from where it is standing. Even though we have made many heavier than air machines to allow us flight, flying freely in whichever direction like a bird is still a dream. The closest we come to the avian flight pattern is via the help of helicopters.

Any of the helicopters suppliers in India will tell you a long story of how these metal birds have helped our lives in numerous and easily recognisable ways as well as through some less known facts. Bell helicopters India have the major focus of attention in such talks as they have been around for much longer than any other models and makes and have been used in a variety of operations by most helicopters suppliers in India.

The Bell 47 was the first helicopter that was certified for civilian use in 1946. Earlier it was being exclusively used for the army with a service record in Korea as the H-13 Sioux. It has a single Franklin six cylinder piston engine that has even been adapted for lunar lander training exercises for the Apollo program. It was also used for many television serials like MASH and was the first helicopter to be used for live news coverage. Around a 1,000 of them are still airworthy around the world and being used in various capacities.

The next best known from the Bell series is the UH-1 Iroquois, also called the Huey, with a history of association with Vietnam and a permanent place in the pop culture around the world. Its production continues even today since its inception in 1956 with over 16,000 being used in various military and civil uses as the Bell 412 most commonly found when you search for Bell helicopters India has to offer.

It is a two blade rotor with a single shaft turbine power design and a huge body suitable for medical evacuations, gunships, transporter and other general utility purposes. The characteristic ‘whump-whump’ sound of its two blade rotor has been a synonym in army circles with air assault or an extraction help depending upon which side of the border you fought.

The Bell 206 JetRanger is the recognisable civilian helicopter made famous by films, television crews, newspapers and the media since 1962. With a top speed of 55 mph they have been in the skies patrolling and checking speedsters and providing emergency services or local news. They are also the most used by celebrities and corporates to move around. It has a D-250 twin blade single turbine prototype. In 1982, it also completed a first around the world helicopter flight in only 29 days.

And we cannot forget the Bell AH-1 Cobra which was the very first attack helicopter made especially for military use in 1965. They are a staple of any advanced army around the world. It has a narrow forward fuselage and stub wings. Its fighter jet like seating in front and the pilot behind is unique for an attack helicopter. It is mostly used as escorts or transporters during peace times to this day.
