Screwdrivers: Essential, Reliable and Basic

Flat Head and Philips Screwdriver

Invented during the 15^th century, the flathead is the oldest known type of screwdriver. It has a flat tip with a single slot. Most commonly manually driven, it fits only the slotted screw head. While they are available in power-driven models, they aren’t too effective since it can easily slip off the screw head causing damage. This screwdriver is of two types, namely the cabinet and the keystone. Cabinet flathead screwdrivers are specifically used in jewelry making and watches. Sometime around the 19^th century, the Philips head screwdriver was introduced as the first power-driven tool. Pozidriv and Square Screwdriver

The Pozidriv has a cross sign tip which is offset by 45 degrees. Popular in Europe, they provide better stability and resistance and are therefore used in cases that require higher torque. Among the screwdriver sets purchased online, the Robertson screwdriver or the square screwdriver has a tapered square-shaped tip. With no angles, it has incredible centering and a strong locking system which makes it very comfortable to use. Usually used for industrial purposes in the USA and Canada, it is highly reliable and efficient.

Torx and Hex Screwdriver

Often used by automotive mechanics or technicians, the Torx screwdriver has star-shaped tips with six round lobes. The circular lobes ensure there is a low radial force which in turn increases the life of the screw and the driver. Usually powered, the Torx screwdriver can be used even at very high speeds with absolutely no chances of slipping. It is available in different sizes that are determined by a number system. As the number increases the tip size also increases. Another type you may find when you buy a screwdriver set online or from a store is the Hexagonal screwdriver. Its tip has six straight slots that are primarily used to secure nuts and bolts rather than unscrew them. Also available in a power-driven model, it is fast and error-free.
