Why I love Chalk Paint
Posted by Cate Griffing on October 18th, 2019
I absolutely love to DIY. Whether it\'s a craft project or adding faux shiplap to my walls, I\'m in for it all. I especially love to paint and revamp old furniture pieces that are 9 times out of 10 found on the side of the road. (Have I mentioned I\'m also very thrifty?) I don\'t use regular old latex paint though, I use chalk paint.
I love chalk paint. It gives the furniture pieces I refinish an old vintage feel. And of course, I love that style. Chalk paint is what I\'ll use for my furniture projects 99 percent of the time. And every piece turns out amazing.
So why is it about chalk paint that has a hold over me? There are several reasons.
1. No prep
The main quality I love about chalk paint is that there is virtually no prep work involved. So I\'m talking no sanding, no priming, no stripping, none of it. It adheres to almost any surface even fabric! Not having to do major prep work is a huge selling point. Chalk paint will allow you to breeze through a project in no time.
I do want to mention there will be times some prep is involved and that highly depends on each individual project. Also, the one prep step that needs to always be done is cleaning your piece of furniture. This is non-negotiable.
2. You can DIY it
Yes, you can DIY chalk paint. There are a few different recipes to choose from and each of them only requires 3 ingredients. One of those ingredients is regular latex paint. I recently completed a project using Sherwin Williams Light French Gray but made it into chalk paint.
The best part is that homemade chalk is extremely simple to make and can be any color, not just a black color.
The best part about DIYing chalk paint is that you save money. Isn\'t that the purpose of DIYing in the first place? Store-bought chalk paint can get expensive, so I stick to the DIY version. In my opinion, it performs the same, if not better.
3. Easy to use.
Chalk Paint is incredibly easy to use. There are no special steps or supplies you need to be able to paint with it. All you need is a paintbrush and you are ready to paint your little heart out.
To sum it up, chalk paint is an amazing product. With the limited amount of prep work involved and the ease of use it makes taking on painting projects fun and enjoyable.
I hope I gave you enough reasons to want to try chalk paint to see for yourself.
