Important Precautions Before And After The Pest Control Treatment

Posted by Michael Griffin on October 19th, 2019

Often, people leave their home as it is when they call a pest management service in St. Lucie without realizing the damage they are causing. Pest control involves the use of pesticides that are essentially toxic substances that can harm humans just as much as the pests they target. Even organic pesticides may not be safe for humans. People trust pest control companies to know what should be moved and what shouldn’t when in fact they don’t. To prevent poisoning food and other items, homeowners must do some prep work. Some precautions also need to be made after the treatment.

Precautions Before Pest Management Service Arrives

These are the precautions you should take before the pest management company arrives:

  1. Ask If Chemicals Are Safe: If you or other residents suffer from allergies or health problems, ask the pest control company about allergens in the mix. Children, elderly, pregnant women, people recovering from surgery and pets may also be vulnerable.

  2. Move Furniture & Appliances: Furniture and appliances may get in the service provider’s way. And if they are infected, they need to be placed away from walls to prevent termites and bed bugs from escaping. It is important to move furniture and large appliances before the company arrives. This will save you and the pest control company some time.

  3. Clear The Kitchen & Dining Room: You should pack all the utensils in boxes and place them elsewhere. Unplug your appliances and shift or cover them. Pack all food items in a thick plastic bag. Finish perishable food items and discard the leftovers. Cover your water filter’s outlet.

  4. Clear The Bathroom: If your bathroom is infested, you need to clear out everything so that you don’t ingest the chemical when brushing or bathing.

  5. Shift Pets & Plants: Pets and plants are sensitive to toxic substances. Pets due to their keen sense and plants due to their ability to absorb from air and water. Ask your neighbors to take care of your pets and plants until your home is safe. You can also leave your plants in areas that won’t be sprayed and wrap them.

  6. Pack Clothes & Cover Items: Clothes, keys, hangers, frames, books, etc. need to be brushed to get rid of insects and packed in a thick bag.

  7. Lounge Elsewhere: If the chemicals are dangerous, you may need to lounge elsewhere. Book a motel or ask your friends for help.

Precautions After Pest Management Service Leaves

These are the precautions you need to take after the pest control company leaves:

  1. Wait: If the chemicals are dangerous, the pest control company may ask you to vacate the premises and stay elsewhere for some time. Stay away from your premise for the recommended duration before returning. Pets and plants may need to stay out longer as they are more sensitive.

  2. Check For Pests: Sometimes, pests may remain even after a thorough treatment. Search the usual hiding spots and if you find any pest alive, contact the pest management service in St. Lucie to evaluate why the problem persists. At times, chemicals take time to take effect so no other action may be required.

  3. Clean Dead Pest: Dead pests attract other pests. They need to be thrown quickly. You may spot some dead pests long after the treatment because sometimes the chemicals take time to take effect. Keep checking the usual hiding spots for them.

  4. Do Not Clean: Pesticides take time to finish all pests. Mopping may wear the pesticide layer off and allow pests to return. Most pest management companies recommend waiting for seven to ten days before cleaning.

  5. Don’t Use More Pesticides: They may react with the pesticides and either create toxic effects or reduce its effectiveness.

  6. Discard Leftovers: If you left some food items out in the open, discard them immediately. They are not safe for consumption, even with organic pesticides.

  7. Use Gloves: It’s not necessary but using gloves when touching areas where the pesticide was applied is safer. It protects your skin and prevents health issues.

You can keep everyone safe by taking the precautions mentioned above.
