PTE Writing Test: Top Tips for Acing Essay & Summarize Written Text

The Writing Module in the PTE Academic Test evaluates your writing proficiency. A test-taker will be assessed on how good they are at grammar, sentence formatting, and understanding the context. The PTE Writing test has two tasks, namely, Summarise Written Text and Essay.

Summarize Written Text

What you need to do

This task requires you to read a text of approximately 300 words, summarize it into one sentence. You are required to complete PTE Summary writing within the time limit of 10 minutes. The most important catch is that the summary has to be within 5-75 words.

How you will be scored

Let’s look at the scoring parameters and how you will be scored:

Content: 0, 1 or 2
Length/Form: 0, 1 or 2
Grammar: 0, 1 or 2
Vocabulary: 0, 1 or 2

  • The summary has to capture the central point and other sub-points to score full marks for content
  • Your summary should NOT be less than 5 words or exceed 75 words to score full marks for form
  • For scoring high in grammar, you have to write a complex sentence and avoid making any errors
  • For high marks in vocabulary, make sure to use academic words and synonyms
  • The text could be from a wide variety of topics like History, Architecture, Economics, etc.
  • Pearson says that prior knowledge of the subject matter is not necessary. All you need to write the summary is in the text

Tips for Summarize Written Text

  1. Divide the task into three parts: Read, Write and Edit
  2. When you read, try to understand the central point and other sub-points of the text. Ask questions ‘Who did what?’ or ‘What happened?’ to yourself.
  3. Identify the main keywords. E.g., names of people, places, things, objects. Don’t get into unnecessary details, and understand the overview of the test.
  4. Even if you have prior knowledge of the topic of the text, don’t include your own ideas in the summary.
  5. Avoid taking whole phrases from the text, even if you borrow words.
  6. Avoid using the grammar you are not confident about.
  7. Avoid using vocabulary you are not comfortable with.

Essay Writing

What you need to do

In this task, you have to write a 200-300-word essay. The topic will be given to you in the form of 2-3 sentence-long prompt. The essay has to be written in 20 minutes.

How you will be scored

Content: 0, 1, 2 or 3
Form: 0, 1, 2
Development, structure and coherence: 0, 1, 2
Grammar: 0, 1, 2
General linguistic range: 0, 1, 2
Vocabulary range: 0, 1, 2
Spelling: 0, 1, 2

  • Your essay has to deal with all the all major and minor aspects of the prompt for a high score in content
  • For a good score under form, make sure that the essay length is between 200-300 words
  • The essay must follow a good development and logical structure. This is important to score high in development, structure and coherence
  • The grammar must be on point for a 100% score in grammar
  • The essay must make use of a wide range of language to convey thoughts, without any ambiguity
  • The essay must utilise a full range of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions
  • The essay must not have any spelling errors for a high score in spelling

Tips for Essay Writing

  1. Stick to the given word limit
  2. Read the given topic carefully to know what type of an essay you are expected to write
  3. Use academic English only
  4. Avoid the use of bullet points
  5. Use clear, succinct paragraphs to structure your thoughts.
  6. Avoid expressing too many ideas in a single paragraph. Use examples to support your ideas
  7. Don’t use jargon
  8. Use a good mix of simple, complex and compound sentences
  9. Take care of correct spellings, capitalisation and punctuations. Make correct use of the phrases
  10. Devote the last few minutes to proof-reading your essay
