Design Options for Wall Plate Switches

Posted by wallplate on October 23rd, 2019

Wall plate switches are an easy to overlook yet vital part of any room. They cover up the wires that make light switches work, making rooms safer and nicer-looking. There are several different elements of wall plates that can be customized based on desire and necessity.

Switch Configurations

Wall plates have many different switch and outlet configurations, so there are plenty of ways to design how new electrical wiring will come together. And, there are bound to be a variety of wall plates perfect for an already existing configuration.

Screws

Most wall plates have visible screws. But, some people would prefer a sleeker design. There are screwless wall plates available that provide a perfectly flat and uniform look across the entire plate. This design does raise some concerns, though. Without screws, how will the plate stay on? Despite the name, screwless wall plates do indeed have screws. The screws screw into an inner plate that the outer plate slides over, resulting in a screwless look while still being held snugly in place.

Size

Normal-sized wall plates are the most common, hence why they're considered normal, but there are also oversized wall plates. Some people prefer these simply because they think they look better. But, oversized wall plates can be used to make sure any unusually large holes are entirely covered. If an oversized wall plate is being used, oversized plates should be used throughout the rest of that room for uniformity.

Material

Wall plates come in more materials than most people would think. There are many different varieties of metal available. Gray and brown metals are both available, so the plate can match other metal in the room better. For more rustic homes, there are wood wall plates that come in both finished or unfinished. Finished wood can be installed right away. Unfinished needs to be stained first. But, this means it can be finished to match wood walls exactly. Stone wall plates are perfect for matching to counters or backsplashes. There's also classic ceramic for a more traditional look. Or, if the wallpaper in a room is too pretty to cover, there are also clear wall plates that will keep the wallpaper visible.

Wall plate switches are an easy detail to overlook when looking at a room as a whole. But, they're an important part of putting a room together. Choosing the right wall plate can improve the look of a room, whereas choosing one that doesn't fit a room will make it stand out in a bad way.
