The purpose of a brake and light inspection is to make sure that a vehicle being issued a salvage certificate is in a safe operation according to manufacturer specifications prior to being retiled. A vehicle also needs these inspections for Brake & Light to correct any defect cited by a law enforcement agency or the California Highway patrol.

When you buy a salvaged vehicle, either due to accident damage or theft of the vehicle, the California Department Of Motor Vehicles(DMV) treats the case as ownership of the vehicle is going to change, even though the owner may remain the same.

DMV requires the vehicle to get a brake and light inspection at a State Licensed Inspection station to conduct a thorough and complete examination of Brake and lamp components which may have been possibly damaged or misaligned due to an accident or resulting of theft damage.

When the process is successfully completed and passed a certificate is issued to be presented to the DMV or law agencies of correction of any cited component for the safety of the vehicle.

 Brake component Inspection:

1. Brake Shoes, Pads and Rotors should be within manufacturer specifications.

2. Brake Drums must be within the manufacturer's specifications.

3. All braking hardware should be present and in good working condition.

4. Emergency Foot or hand brake should be working properly.

5. There should not be any leakage in the hydraulic system.

6. Warning Lamps must come on when and go off when they are designed.

 Lamp component Inspection:

1. Originally installed lighting component equipment must be in working order.

2. Headlamps have to be working and aimed at manufacture specifications.

3. Headlamps must be amiable.

4. All adjusting hardware must be in working order.

5. Lenses and reflectors should be intact.

6. Headlights must be aimed according to manufacturer specifications.

7. Body damage that effects the properly working of lighting equipment must be repaired before the inspection.

8. Damage to headlamp aiming pads or lenses need to be corrected prior to the inspection.

9. If the vehicle is equipped with aftermarket lighting, it must work and installed properly according to state regulations or be removed.
