Just Like Humans, Cats Also Need Help To Recover Post Surgery

Posted by Camino Animal Hospital on November 8th, 2019

Like humans, cat surgery in Pleasant Valley can leave your pet lethargic and weak. Since every cat is different, there way of dealing post surgery should be as per vet’s advice. Nevertheless, here are few things that should be done for faster recovery of your cat.

Feeding the cat after the surgery

When your cat wakes up from their anaesthetic they might feel a bit nauseous, and unwilling to have usual food. It is advisable to feed them with something small and light like chicken and fish. It is a healthy and nutritious choice which is best for post-operation meals. You can also serve them routine normal food but only a quarter of what they would normally have.

Exercise

Keep your cat indoors until either their stitches have been removed or advised by vet. Try to prevent your cat from running up and down the stairs, climbing up interesting-looking things, and playing too hard with other pets. You can make exercise very light as advised by vet for faster recovery. But remember if the cat is reluctant, don’t force. Let them take their time.

Plastic collars for cats

Just like dogs, cats might need a plastic collar to stop them licking their wound. These collars have soft fabric that prevent pet licking, biting, or scratching the wrong place. Your cat should wear the collar all the time, including at night, as when they’re left alone the temptation to chew their wound might be too great. Take the measurements and order the collar accordingly.

Caring for stitches and wounds

Normally the cat’s stitches are removed after about ten days, but as every cat and every procedure is different. Unlike humans some stitches are hidden under the skin with furs and some dissolve by themselves without causing much discomfort. Your vet will let you know exactly what kind of stitch your cat has, and tell you whether they need to be removed. Depending on the procedure the cat has been treated for, they might have wounds closed with stitches, staples, or even internal sutures. Check the site of procedure every day, and if there’s anything unusual like redness, swelling, discharge or bleeding, contact a vet immediately.

For your cat to recover quickly, it is important that you take extra care and give proper nourishment to them.
