The energy your body gets from the nutrients in the food you eat is measured as calories. Your body weight is determined by the amount of energy obtained from your food compared to the amount of energy that your body is using. The surplus energy you take in from food and drink is stored as fat.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the total number of calories that your body needs to perform basic, life-sustaining functions. Basal metabolism rises as a child matures and peaks at around 16 or 17, after this point it typically starts to decrease.

The amount of water that is contained in the tissue, blood of a human body is the body water. The percentage of the body water in different fluid compartments adds up to total body water. The percentage of the body water content varies with age, sex, size…

Weight loss is a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits or muscle. Intentional weight loss is in most cases achieved with the help of diets.
