How To Know Air Purifier At Home Is Working

Posted by james joyse on November 11th, 2019

People often believe buying an whole house air purifier is enough. Like any other device air purifiers also needed to be checked every few days. Here are few ways that can help you check that air purifier is running properly or not.

Using a Filter Indicator

To check whether an air purifier is running to its optimal level is through filter indicator. Similar to all filter systems, air purifiers lose their ability to remove contaminants from the air as their filters get older. In that event, filters needed to be replaced for the purifier to keep working properly. Filter indicators measures the performance and give out signals that filter needs to be changed. When you see your filter indicator light go on, it is a simple easy way to tell that your air purifier isn’t working as well as it should.

Checking the Filter Manually

Machines are an efficient helping hands but nothing can match the inspection of human eye. Like any electronic system, it’s not wise not to rely on a purifier’s filter indicator. There are always chances that it could give a false read. From time to time, it’s a good ideally to manually check your filter, especially if you suspect that your air purifier may not be working at full capacity. Any presence of debris, hair or dust in the filter can be easily deducted by eye inspection. If it’s too dirty, chances of replacement is high. One very useful reminder that this only works for HEPA purifiers, as carbon filters won’t show any outward signs of aging.

Chemical Tests Kits

When you decide to do further and more serious investigation on whether your air purifier is working, chemical air quality test kits are a good start. Air quality test kits can test for mold and mildew, volatile organic compounds and biological contaminants like dander and pollen in your indoor air very conveniently. To use this chemical test make sure you turn off the air purifier and after an hour or two conduct the test as instructed on the test kit. Record your results and then turn on the purifier. Wait for 24 hours, check as your purifier is operating, run a second test and again record the results. If the results are the same or worse than when your air purifier was off, then you know you have a problem with your air purifier and its not working.

You can also contact professional to get it checked, if none of the above tests works.
