JEANS- A WARDROBE STABLE AND A TIMELESS CLASSIC

Fashion trends may come and go, but a pair of jeans will forever remain a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. A nice pair of jeans always feature on a girl’s list of the essential items in her closet, and for a good reason. Jeans are comfortable. They can be paired with anything, from t-shirts and shirts to even dresses and skirts. And, they come in a variety of styles and shades. Over the years, jean styles have morphed and evolved- from the flared jeans of the ’60s to women’s high waisted jeans today.

When they were first invented in the 1800s, they were only worn by mine workers and others who needed clothes that were reliable and well built. They became more mainstream when they entered Hollywood in the 1930s, when they came to be associated with cowboy characters and the actors who essayed those roles. After another 20 years, jeans became more popular due to stars like Marlon Brando, who wore them almost regularly. However, until then, mostly men were seen wearing jeans on screen as well as off. In 1934, Levi Strauss & Co, more popularly known as Levi today, became the first company to dare to make a pair of jeans that were exclusively for women. They were called Lady Levi’s jeans. In 1952, Marilyn Monroe donned a pair of jeans in her movie River of No Return, which heralded a new dawn in women’s fashion. The next few decades saw an emergence of a myriad of shapes and styles. The 1950s were marked by boxy shapes and western cuts. In the early ’60s, jeans with flared bottoms and embellishments were made famous by celebrities like Cher and Jimi Hendrix. Bell bottoms that featured patched fabrics and frayed cuffs emerged as the style of the early days of the 70’s, while the end of that decade saw jeans becoming tighter and darker, which was mostly due to punk influences. The rise of hip hop in the 1980’s led to the birth of jeans that were baggy and oversized. This was also the time when women’s high waisted jeans became a thing. Acid washed, and distressed denim became popular in the latter half of the ’80s. Even though denim overalls had been in the fashion scene for many years, they became the new “it” fashion in the ’90s. The 2000s and 2010s have mostly seen the reemergence of vintage styles and shades. Whether it is flared bottoms, acid washed, bootcut, or mom jeans- there has been a strong revival of fashion of the ’80s and the ’70s.

The last couple of years have seen experimental and innovative jean styles, which are more focused on becoming viral trends than becoming a timeless fashion.
