Safety Tips For Towing a Car Trailer

Towing a camper or a trailer is not just hitching it up and go, it’s a process which requires a lot of attention and patience to make sure that the camper or trailer is attached properly and you are ready for the drive. Towing is a process that should be done properly otherwise the tow vehicle and the towed could end up as wrecks.

To ensure the safety of the vehicle and its occupants it’s important to follow a few steps, which can make towing a hassle-free task.

Some tips for towing a trailer are as follows:

1. Know your vehicle:

This is the most important part of towing the owner should know each and everything about the tow vehicle and the towed vehicle. The tow vehicle should be eligible for handling extra backload and should be able to tow something. For a better understanding of this, the owner should go through the vehicle’s user manual and follow the instructions in your hitch owner's manual for proper setup. Check the tongue of the trailer whether it is properly hitched or not.

2. Towing capacity:

The next thing you should check is the towing capacity of the towing vehicle. You do not want to go onboard with a tow truck that does not have the towing capacity to handle the weight of the trailer you want to tow.

3. Check the tools and essential vehicle parts:

Before towing a vehicle, it’s important to check all the necessary parts of both vehicles. One should check the tires, brakes, couplers, lights and other important parts of both vehicles to make sure, it’ll not breakdown on the way. Inflate the tires properly, check the wheel bearings, an overheated bearing will sideline your rig as fast as a flat tire.

4. Adapt your driving:

No matter how better you know your vehicle, it’ll drive differently when attached to a trailer. Towing a trailer requires much attention in driving as well, no one wants to get swayed with the trailer while making sharp turns. While taking sharp turns, you’ll need to swing-out. Taking a normal turn can result in an accident.  No matter how free the road is, do not give in to the urge to step on the accelerator. The added weight also changes the ability to accelerate and de-accelerate.

Always try to tow a simuator trailer with less weight for a better driving experience. Towing seems to be an easy task but it needs a lot of knowledge and attentiveness.
