How Child Seats Protect Young Kids

Children and cars aren’t a safe combination. The chances of a kid getting injured in a car accident are quite high. However, this doesn’t mean that you should never ride with children in the car. You just have to make sure that they are well-protected and even in the event of a car crash, don’t get seriously injured. For starters, you should never allow them to sit in the front until they are 13. Moreover, if the child is under 4 years old, you should install a child seat for him/her. These child seats can go a long way in keeping the child restrained and stop them from being ejected out of their seat every time you apply brakes in a hurry. Here is how the child seats go about protecting your young kids.

Keep Them Restrained

The normal seatbelts in a car are designed for adults and thus, can’t provide the same level of safety to a kid. This is where the child seat helps. It makes it impossible for the child to be ejected out of the backseat of the car and vault towards the windscreen if a car crash occurs. They have seatbelts and harnesses that are designed to fit the body of the child and ensure that the children remain within the seat at all times. The child seat also ensures that kids can’t wriggle out and roam around in the backseat. However, for the child seat to be effective, they need to be properly fastened to the car seat so that they don’t move about during accidents or crashes.

Fit the Child’s Size

The biggest reason why child seats are recommended for children under the ages of 4 is that they fit the size of the child. The normal seat of a car whether at the back or the front is not ideally suited for seating a young kid. It is just too big for him/her. The child can easily roll around in the seat even with the seatbelt on. Keeping the child safe becomes a near impossibility in such scenarios. You can’t keep hold of the child while driving. Neither can you hold it while you are sitting at the front or the back as there is still the risk of the child slipping out of your grasp. Thus, a child seat that is appropriate for the young kid’s size and weight is a must-have.

Don’t Cause Injury

Seatbelts of a car can cause injury to the child since they put a lot of pressure on their small bodies. In most cars, the seatbelt straps keep the body secure by applying pressure to the hipbone and the breastbone. While this pressure isn’t too much for an adult, it can be life-threatening for a young kid. The breastbone and hipbone in children aren’t properly formed so they aren’t capable of withstanding any excessive pressure. A child seat, on the other hand, has harnesses that apply less pressure to the body of the child. Thus, there is no risk of an injury.
