4 Wedding Look Ideas for the Unconventional Bride

Posted by blackhalo on November 19th, 2019

When it comes to what you'll wear on your big day, looking for the perfect bridal gown can be difficult (harder than finding the right partner, even). You spend hours and days scouring shops and catalogs for dresses, only to be disappointed because they're either too common or unavailable. Sometimes, the piece just isn't you.

But maybe the question isn't whether you've looked far and wide enough. Maybe you're limiting yourself to the usual frilly white dress. Below are a few ideas you can consider when choosing an unconventional and unforgettable bridal attire.

Every Shade of Hue

White wedding gowns became in vogue in 1840 when the English watched (and possibly gushed over) the nuptials of Queen Victoria. The original trendsetting royal wore ivory, sparking a centuries-old tradition that many have followed. While the crisp color is a lovely sight, there's nothing wrong with deviating from the usual and donning another shade from a wide spectrum of colors. Try blush to bring out your perfectly flushed skin or purple for a more dramatic contrast with your tone. Red reflects a fiery personality while blue makes for a regal appearance.

Jump In

If a big, puffy number isn't for you, then that's totally fine. There are plenty of elegant evening jumpsuits out there that you can choose from instead. These one-piece wonders are really versatile; you can style them any way you want to with various fabrics and accessories. For a romantic and luxurious look, choose a pantsuit made of lace or brocade. Pair it with an embroidered veil and delicate jewelry. Meanwhile, smooth satins, silks, and blends give off a sleeker and cooler attitude. A wide-brimmed hat and minimalist or statement accessories will complete the ensemble.

Through Highs and Lows

For the bride who can't decide between a long or short dress, why not go for a high-low hemline? This type of cut is high enough in the front to show off your legs and low enough at the back to create a long train. It's a surefire way to stun the crowd (and your spouse-to-be) as you walk down the aisle.

Opposites Attract

Some gowns are made of two or more fabrics, with one acting as the main feature of the piece. Think of Grace Kelly's famous (and often emulated) wedding gown. It had a simple silk faille skirt that highlighted the more intricate bodice that was made with antique Brussels lace. The balance between the plain and detailed fabrics was nice, but you can be bolder when it comes to fabrics and textures. Try matching a taffeta top with architectural cuts and a pleated chiffon bottom. It's your wedding, so don't be afraid to go big with styling.

At the end of the day, it's all about wearing something that makes you feel beautiful and happy. Look at a selection of elegant evening jumpsuits,  dresses, and gowns now for your big day.
