How to Tell If a Dog is Sick? Check Out 5 Signs

Posted by VeterinaryClinic on November 21st, 2019

Dubai is a place that has strict rules and regulations on keeping dogs as pets. Still, people don’t hesitate in showing their love for canines and keeping them. But, having pets is not all about love and affection. Pets also get sick and need proper care.

This raises an important question -how does a pet owner identify that his/her pet is sick? While humans can easily communicate and tell about their sickness, pets cannot. A pet owner has to figure out whether the pet is sick or not. This article sheds light on the signs of sickness in dogs.

  1. Bad Breath/ Drooling

While drooling may be common in some breeds, not all dogs drool. In case, there is an unusual amount of saliva on the floor or in the dog’s food bowl, it indicates that the dog is sick. While bad breath is already a problem in itself, it can be a sign that the dog is not getting enough nutrients as needed to stay healthy. Thus, if the dog is drooling or having bad breath, it’s time for a visit to a veterinary clinic in Dubai

  1. Lethargy/Lack of Energy

The most energetic dogs also get tired easily when they are sick. Though the behavior of dogs may vary and pet owners know whether their dogs are usually active or passive. But, if the dog is acting tired, resting in bed or spending less time interacting with people or outside, this means something. Take care of the dog by offering nutritional food and water frequently so that he/she will stay nourished and hydrated. A visit to the veterinarian may help in finding the probable reason behind this lethargy or passiveness.

  1. Loss of Appetite

Just like humans, dogs also tend to ignore food if they are sick. When dogs get sick, they crave a lot more water and a lot less food. Since dog food is usually dry, dogs don’t enjoy their food in sickness. So, keep an eye on the food bowl to check if their appetite is normal or not.

  1. Excessive Panting

During sickness and anxiety, dogs usually pant or pace around quickly a lot. It’s because they feel discomfort and are not sure what’s causing this restlessness. So, if a dog is panting a lot, sit with them and try to calm and comfort them. Once they feel at ease, schedule an appointment for a nearby Dubai veterinary clinic

  1. Upset Stomach

A pet owner can’t always tell what the dog is thinking. However, if the dog is throwing up or not eating in the usual way, it’s a sign of an upset stomach. It means either the dog needs a visit to a vet or a change in the diet. You can always search online or consult a vet to get an idea of a variety of dog’s food and when to get prescription dog food.

Over time, dog owners learn about the behavior, eating patterns, and other habits of their dogs. If something doesn’t feel right with the dog and no particular reason seems to be there, it is highly advisable to take them to see vet experts at a nearby veterinary clinic in Dubai as early as possible.
