An examination is a test that determines the ability of a student. Different types of exams are conducted all over the world to evaluate a person’s skill and intelligence. As parents, we want the best for our kids and prosperous life for them. For this, competitive exams and activities are a required platform because they give the perfect opportunity for kids to use and enhance their knowledge. Exams such as Olympiads, Spell Bee, JEE, etc. help your child develop an external and rational outlook that is beyond the classroom.

Advantages

Today, examinations play an essential part in one’s educational career. Here, let us look at a few benefits of competitive exams:

  • They act as a tool for learning and working. Tests are structured in a way that tests the application of the concepts taught in class. For example, to test the understanding of ferromagnetic materials, it may ask you to identify the household materials that are ferromagnetic in nature.

  • A student can analyze his/her level of performance and knowledge.

  • They create a sense of competition that encourages and pushes the limit of a student’s ability to do best.

  • Good performance in the exams are rewarded by scholarships and awards

  • Good grades translate into admission to prestigious colleges and eventually, better job placements

  • Exams also help identify teaching flaws, and if any subject should be re-taught or explained differently.

  • Examinations train students to withstand the pressure of exams which later becomes useful when they go out to work. Students will be more equipped to withstand the pressure of their career, instead of crumbling under the tremendous amount of stress.

Disadvantages

Having listed the advantages of examinations in the previous section, let us now look at the various disadvantages of exams:

  • Failure in exams often lead to loss of confidence in many

  • Exams can lead to multiple health problems such as nausea, loose motion and headaches, etc.

  • Competitive traits of exams can lead to peer problems such as ruined friendship

  • Sometimes, students are unable to identify the real purpose of exams. For many, passing exams means entering a good college. Therefore, learning is just for the sake of formality.

  • Exams measure relatively superficial knowledge that defeats the whole purpose of an exam. The chances are that a person with fewer grades might turn out to be more successful than a person with good grades

Concluding, we can say that exams have both good and bad sides to it; it depends on how you deal with it.
