Mineral oils are a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons obtained from crude oil by different methods of distillation and refining. The proportion of mineral oils compared to total crude oil production is quite low, i.e., about 1.5% and only about 15% out of this proportion represents mineral oils used as process fluids.

The structure of mineral oils is complex. In addition to liquid hydrocarbons with a wide range of molecular and specific weights, there are impurities of sulphur, oxygen, and nitrogen compounds. Thousands of different organic compounds have been identified in the composition of crude oil. Nevertheless, the percentage composition of most types of oil is quite uniform

Mineral oils such as petrol, fuel oils, and petroleum distillates in general, do not attack matured concrete, although they seriously affect the hardening of fresh concrete. Such straight petroleum oils do not contain any constituents which react chemically with cement compounds, and their action on fresh concrete is a physical one by which their immiscibility with water impedes hydration of the cement. Although mineral oils have no chemical action on concrete, it is difficult to make concrete impermeable to them, and in the case of the lighter oils, virtually impossible.
