Dental crowns are also a type of Cosmetic Dentistry. If you have had a Root Treatment or a large filling is present then a Crown is needed to protect the tooth and make it last as long as possible. The Cosmetic Dentist prepares and fits your Dental Crown. They are laboratory made and are extremely strong. They can be made from Porcelain bonded to metal, Metal Alloy or all Porcelain. They can also be made from Gold although nowadays the latter is preferred as they tend to look better in your mouth. As with all Dental Treatments there are some potential complications. But majority can be avoided if the Dental Crown is made with care and attention. Care and attention are guaranteed at our dental practice. Potential complications that can occur are: The Dental Crown can be too high causing pain when biting and eating. This can be avoided during the fitting stage of the crown. A special marking paper is used. We ask you to bite on this paper and grind your teeth together. This will mark all the high spots that can be adjusted by the Dentist. The Dental Crown doesn't fit correctly. Care during the preparation and impression stage would avoid this. Plaque and food debris can accumulate in the areas where the crown doesn't fit leading to decay. Decay is not entirely removed before placing the Zirconium Porcelain Crowns. Problems can arise in the future. The Dental Crown would need to be removed but because it has been cemented in place it can only be drilled off. Once the decay has been thoroughly removed a new Crown is needed. A Dental Crown needs a stable tooth to be cemented onto. After Root Canal Treatment for Dental Bridge Problems a post is needed to help hold the crown in place. If the post is not long enough after a while the crown can become loose and fall off. It is not always possible to re-cement these post and crowns back on in which case new post and Dental Crowns are needed. These potential complications are the same for Porcelain Bonded Crown. Dental Bridges are used to replace missing teeth. They are usually cemented to teeth either side of the gap.
