The condition of infertility is known to affect 1 in every 6 individuals all over the globe. Infertility is diagnosed when a couple fails to conceive even after a year of trying. When the infertility cause is diagnosed in the female partner then it is said to be the case of female infertility. Female infertility accounts for around 50% of the total causes of infertility. Let us have a look at what are the causes and treatment options for Female Infertility and from where you can get the best treatment.

Causes of female infertility

Ovulation troubles and problems with fallopian tubes and uterus are the two major reasons women face fertility issues. Let us have a look at why these problems may arise.

Ovulation problems: problems with ovulation may arise due to

  • Thyroid gland problems

  • Excessive weight

  • Stress

  • A hormonal imbalance

  • A cyst or tumour

  • Eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia

  • Alcohol or drug use

  • Intensive workouts or exercise that results in significant loss of body fat

  • Extremely short menstrual cycles

Problems or damage to fallopian tubes or uterus

  •  Fibroids

  • Endometriosis

  • Scar tissue or adhesions

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease

  • A previous infection

  • Polyps in the uterus

  • Chronic medical illness

  • A previous ectopic (tubal) pregnancy

  • A birth defect

  • DES syndrome

  • Abnormality in the cervical mucus can also result in infertility. Cervical mucus, which is abnormal can prevent the sperm from meeting the egg or make it quite difficult for the sperm to enter the egg.

Treatment of infertility in women

  •  Hormones and Fertility drugs to assist in the ovulation or restoration of the hormonal level: fertility drugs work in a similar fashion like your hormones (FSH and LH) for triggering ovulation. Example of such medication includes clomiphene citrate and gonadotropins.

  • Use of certain antibiotics to get relief from any underlying infection

  • Surgery for removing the blockage in fallopian tubes like in the case of endometriosis to increase the chances of fertility: Either hysteroscopic or laparoscopic surgeries can be carried out to remove any polyps or fibroids responsible for infertility. Tubal surgeries are also recommended for removing any adhesions or dilating the blocked tubal openings

Assisted reproductive technology (ART)

Female infertility can be successfully treated with the help of assisted reproductive technology, or ART. various types of ART are:

  • IUI (intrauterine insemination): in this method, the male gamete, commonly known as sperm is collected and injected directly inside the woman's womb during her ovulation period. Millions of sperms are placed into the uterus of women when she is close to ovulation.

  • GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer) and ZIFT (zygote intrafallopian transfer): in these methods of assisted reproduction the male and female gamete are collected outside and placed in the fallopian tube of the woman. In the procedure of GIFT, both sperm and eggs are placed into the fallopian tube. In the procedure of  ZIFT, the sperm and eggs are fertilized in a laboratory and then a fertilized egg is placed into the tube at 24 hours.

  • IVF (in vitro fertilization): IVF or in-vitro fertilization is amongst the most popular method of assisted reproduction. In this procedure, the sperm and egg are collected and fertilized in controlled laboratory conditions. The fertilized egg is then allowed to grow for 3 to 5 days after which this developed embryo is placed in the uterus of the woman.
