Breaking News Headlines of the day
As we all know, breaking news falls in the bucket of the events which are developing or breaking. These events are the unexpected ones and include plane crash, fire in the building etc.
If you are covering any breaking news story involving a fire or a shooting or any other emergency situation, you need to be aware that numerous media companies will be covering the same news. Therefore, it is important that in such a competition, it is important to not only get the news first, but also to state the facts accurately. Breaking news turn out to be a ruckus and create too much confusion. In order to report these headlines first, the media houses end up reporting things that are not factually accurate.
Digital journalism has encouraged reporters to report the breaking news almost immediately and publish it online for it to have a vast reach. However, some tips need to be taken into consideration to write these breaking news headlines which include:
i) Do not assume things
It is always better to see something with your eyes and report it rather than reporting things that are not factually accurate. For reporters, the Murphy’s law which states that the one time when you assume things is the time when that assumption turns out to be wrong holds.
ii) Do not plagiarise news
If other organisations have reported something, do not simply copy it and run it on your channel. Instead, do your own homework before anything comes on the television.
iii) Avoid speculating
Since journalists have an important responsibility of reporting the truth, it is preferred that they do not speculate about the news events.
i) Time: It is always advisable to ask yourself some questions such as did the story just happen, are you the first one to report it or is the audience already aware and is the time element significant for the headline.
ii) Audience Needs: The readers hold the supreme place as far as the headlines are concerned. Therefore, it is important to cater to the needs of the audience and consider if they are getting the news from you first and if they are already aware of the news, if they would be informed better from the information that comes from you.
iii) Exclusive: In a world where the same news is broadcasted on all channels at the same time, it is advisable if you report your story to let your readers know that the piece is exclusive. Also See: Breaking News, News Headlines, Shivalik Journal, Same News, News, Breaking, Headlines
