The government-funded healthcare offers free healthcare to Manitobans. Like other provinces, the government pays for every medically necessary care but it deals with prescription drugs, ophthalmology, and chiropractic care differently.
Qualifying for Manitoba Public Health Insurance
Firstly, you are required to live in Manitoba to register in the Manitoba Health program. New residents can access coverage beginning from the first day of the third month of their arrival.
To apply for Canada free healthcare in Manitoba, you are required to provide the following documents: proof of Canadian citizenship or residency, Manitoba health registration form, and previous health card number.
Services Covered by Manitoba Health Insurance
Manitoba covers a minimum amount of services, thanks to the Canada Health Act. The public plan provides coverage for ophthalmology services, chiropractic care, services of dental surgeons, GP and hospital services, etc.
The province also provides prescription drug coverage, under the name “Pharmacare”. This service provides coverage to eligible Manitobans and it does not place any discrimination in age. Furthermore, you are required to pay a portion of the cost of your drug per year through the annual Pharmacare deductible.
However, some drugs may not benefit from Pharmacare. Click here to read more about the drugs that are not covered by the program. Unlike other provinces like Ontario, if you are eligible for CancerCare Manitoba, the province may not cover the cost of prescription drugs for cancer.
Long Term Home Care Coverage in Manitoba
Manitoba has the highest rate of beds per 1,000 people in Canada, however, the cost of long-term care is high in the province. The province will pay a portion of the personal care for people who can no longer remain at home due to health care needs or a disability.
The long-term care coverage includes nursing care, coverage for activities of daily living (ADL) assistance, physiotherapy, meals, laundry and linen services, etc. You are required to live in the province for a consecutive 24 months in order to become eligible for the personal care home funding.
What Does Canada Free Healthcare Cover in Manitoba?
In Manitoba, Canada free healthcare covers emergency care services and medically necessary services but the coverage has gaps.
Some services are only covered partially and some others may not be covered at all. Examples include ophthalmology services and dental services. If you want to access comprehensive coverage, you need to take out private insurance. Visit the Insurdinary blog to learn more.
