If you have Venetian blinds or roller shades at your home, then you need to take care of them regularly. Fabric curtains can quickly build dust on them, which makes cleaning curtains a necessity.

So, here are a few curtain cleaning tips that work on almost every curtain.

When to cry clean your curtains

First things first, if your window coverings are made from a washable fabric, the linings and seams could shrink if you wash them. If you still want to clean them, opt for dry cleaning. Opting for dry-cleaning will prevent curtains and blinds in Melbourne with stitched-in pleats, swags or other elaborate ornamentation that may not withstand washing.

Special fabrics

If you have velvet draperies, then you can freshen it up without washing them! All you need is to brush them from time to time with a chamois cloth dipped in hot water and wrung out thoroughly. However, if you want to wash them, you can remove it by hand in lukewarm or cold water and use mild liquid detergent. Also, remember, while washing swish gently and never twists or wring.

Sun damage

Curtains and blinds can get damaged by the constant exposure to sunlight. If you are washing them in a machine, use the gentle cycle, cold or lukewarm water with mild detergent. After washing, hang them on a clothesline to dry or put them in a clothes dryer on a no-heat or delicate setting.

Sheer curtains

If you have installed sheer curtains to your windows, then it needs to be washed regularly even if they don’t look dirty. That is because by the time dirt appears; they can be permanently discoloured. Sheer curtains are very fragile, and that is the reason they should be cleaned gently.

To clean it, fill half of the machine with cold water and let them soak for about 5 minutes. Pour mild detergent and select rise to drain and then turn the computer on gentle wash setting for just 2-3 minutes. After being washed, dry it in a dryer for 2-3 minutes.
