What Causes Examination Failures

The Home
Poor home conditions such as broken home, quarrelling parents, poverty, and absence of learning facilities could be responsible for failure in some cases. Due to lack of peace at home student can develop some negative emotions such as fear, hatred, anger and insecurity, which will militate against his concentration during studies. Similarly, poverty may not allow parents to procure for their wards the necessary school materials e.g. textbooks, school feel, exercise books, uniform and even biro pens. Poverty can also bring agouti poor feeding, and other physiological needs not being about embarrassing physiological needs not being met. This situation will obviously bring about embarrassing psychological problems, which inhibit success. Also, while learning facilities such as television, radio, telephone and a good library in the home can facilitate learning; absence of these will seriously impair academic activities among students, illiterate parents may not help their wards in their studies as educated parents do.

Sometimes, parents mat impose subjects on their wards for which they neither have the interest nor natural ability. This can lead to failure and frustration.

The School Environment
The school environment can either promote or hider success among its students. Poor boarding facilities/feeding, poor staff strength (number and qualification), poor library and laboratory facilities, inability of teachers to complete their syllabus and lack of motivation from the government in terms of teachers’ welfare (good and regular payment of salaries, fringe benefits in service training and promotion) are some of the school factors that inhibits success among students.

The Student
The student himself/herself can be responsible for his failure in the following ways:

Absenteeism from classes, lateness to classes, not paying attention to lessons, keeping bad company, not having a vision of what he or she should become in the future, not copying notes, hating the teacher and his subjects as well as laziness and the temptation to depend on “expo”. Other are: poor health, ignorance of techniques of answering questions, examination fever, poor time budgeting that results in the students not being able to answer the required number of questions, and of course, violation of examination rules and instruction.

A student preparing for an examination should make sure he or she gets the examination past questions. For instance, if your preparing for AKSU Post UTME Past Questions you should get the past questions and prepare well for the examinations.

Inability to write fast may also cause failure. Students who indulge in sexual or homosexual behaviors, drug addiction, and other anti-social activities have greatly reduced their capacity for academic success. Listening to the teacher and thinking of your boyfriend or girl friend at the same time will inhibit retention of the lesson taught. Too much of sleep which the bible condemns is cancer to success.

Over-confidence may also lead to complacency, pride and then unexpected failure. Choosing subjects one may not have flair for may also lead to failure.

Spiritual Causes
These include satanic activities through witches and wizards, marine spirits, ancestral spirit, and the occultists. There are known cases where students who were brilliant became unsuccessful in their academics through spells, charms and poison. Generational and ancestral curses may make failure a family trait. Another serious spiritual cause of failure is the belief that even without hard work, spiritual leaders of ‘prayer houses’ can manipulate success for them through holy oil, holy water, magic pen, powder or handkerchiefs. Similarly, churches that only talk about heaven, without preparing people for earthly life while waiting for heaven can also demotivate success in life. Equally dangerous is the student’s belief that cultism can enhance his or her success in academics.
