Photopolymer Market 2019: Future Growth and Challenges Analyzed

Posted by Faraz on December 11th, 2019

The global photopolymer market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 15.2% during the forecast period. The 3D printing is the new wave of technological innovation in the world of design, architecture and manufacturing. 3D printing is a kind of additive manufacturing technology where a 3D object is developed by laying down subsequent layers of material at the mm scale. 3D printers print objects by reading a CAD design file or by scanning an object. Currently, 3D printing is used in several industries such as engineering and construction, footwear, jewellery, architecture, consumer products, aerospace, dental and medical industries, automotive, education and industrial design.

The major players that contribute to the growth of the photopolymer market include - Koninklijke DSM N.V., Toray Industries, Inc., BASF SE, Chemence, Inc., and Nova Polymers, Inc. Mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, collaborations

Materials for 3D printing were very limited during the early days of the technology. Today, there is an array of different types of materials available for choice. Different materials are suited for different 3D printing technologies. Some 3D printers process powdered materials which utilize a light source to fuse layers of the powder to make the desired shape. Others process polymer resin materials and utilize a laser to solidify the resin in ultra-thin layers. Another method is the jetting of fine droplets using materials and a binder to fix the layers. One of the most commonly used 3D printing technologies is the stereolithography (SLA) technology. This technology utilizes photocuring resins as raw material. New resins that are being developed will combine transparency, heat resistance and toughness.

In 3D printing, photopolymers are usually liquid plastic resins that toughen while introduced to a light source, including a lamp, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), or a projector. As compared to thermoplastics that are employed in material extrusion technologies, such as fused deposition modeling, photopolymers are thermosets that cannot be remelted, once the chemical reaction occurs to harden the material. The major elements required for photopolymerization process include oligomers and/or monomers and photoinitiators. Stereolithography is based on additive manufacturing technologies, which is known as vat polymerization and are created almost with the use of a light source, such as a laser or projector to cure liquid resin into hardened plastic. Therefore, photopolymers are used in stereolithography and Polyjet techniques specifically use photopolymers to manufacture the products, which in turn, is encouraging the global photopolymer market.

Furthermore, the partnerships were reported for the utilization of 3D printing technology across several areas. For instance, in May 2019, BASF 3D Printing Solutions and its partner Origin, a provider of open-platform additive-manufacturing printer partnered with ECCO, a manufacturer of footwear focusing on a new approach to footwear production. ECCO Group is employing the Origin platform with BASF’s Ultracur3D material at its R&D Center. The preliminary outcomes demonstrate superior mechanical stability and detail accuracy with Origin’s unique programmable polymerization process (P3).

Additionally, in May 2019, BASF SE and Paxis LLC partnered to advance innovative materials for new 3D printing technology. BASF will offer advanced additive manufacturing materials to Paxis LLC for their new WAV technology. Such partnerships represent the emerging focus towards photopolymers for 3D printing applications and thereby driving the global photopolymer market.
