A company that offers any component of cloud computing infrastructure like; SaaS, PaaS or IaaS to individuals or other businesses is referred to as a Cloud Computing Service Provider. Though IaaS, SaaS, and PaaS are the main cloud-based categories, customers purchase a wide variety of cloud services from cloud computing services providers.

IaaS providers

An IaaS cloud computing service provider offers infrastructure components similar to those that are used in on-premise data centers. The infrastructure components include; storage, servers, networking and virtualization layers. The IaaS provider must be hosting all infrastructure components that they offer to clients on their own data center. However, the IaaS cloud computing service provider may opt to offer other services like; storage resiliency, load balancing, security, and monitoring.

SaaS Providers

Currently, SaaS vendors offer numerous business technologies like; customer relationship management software, productivity suites and human resources management software. All of the business technologies offered by SaaS vendors must be hosted on their own data centers and provided to clients over the internet. Notably, some software vendors offer cloud-based options under their on-premise software products for sale.

PaaS Providers

PaaS cloud computing service providers offer cloud infrastructure and services that client’s access in order to perform certain functions. Notably, PaaS products are mainly used by software developers. As such, PaaS providers add more application stacks like; middleware and operating systems to their underlying infrastructure as compared to IaaS providers.

Further, cloud computing service providers are classified based on whether they offer private cloud, hybrid cloud or public cloud services. However, despite the nature of services you seek, cloud computing service providers avail their services as an on-demand and self-provisioning purchase. Customers can pay for their cloud-based services on a monthly, yearly or quarterly subscription basis. There are some cloud computing service providers who have differentiated themselves by targeting vertical market requirements. Such vendors offer services that facilitate industry-specific functions or assist the users to meet particular regulatory requirements. For instance, there is an increase in the number of healthcare cloud products that have been introduced to the market to specifically assist healthcare providers with storage, maintenance, and backup of personal health data.

Summary

Though your choice of cloud computing services provider to work with may be determined by the nature of infrastructure you require, it is advisable to vet a vendor prior to purchasing their services. Some of the attributes to consider include; the physical location of the servers you will be using, the cost of the services, reliability of the cloud computing service provider and security of your business or personal information.
