The annual examination is of 80 marks and the duration is three hours. Here is a pattern of the communicative English language paper. Section A: ReadingThis section has two reading passages: Q.1: A Factual passage 300-350 words with 8 Very Short Answer Type Questions. Q. 2: A Discursive passage of 350-400 words with 4 Short Answer Type Questions to judge inference building capacity, and 4 Very Short Answer Type Questions for vocabulary analysis. Section B: Writing and GrammarQ.3: Writing an article in about 100-120 words based on visual or verbal cue/s. Q.4: Writing a short story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 200-250 words. The Grammar syllabus includes the following areas in CBSE Class 9:
○ Commands and requests ○ Statements ○ Questions
○ Noun clauses ○ Adverb clauses of condition and time ○ Relative clauses
Above topics will be tested through test types as given below: Q.5: Gap filling with 1/2 words to test Prepositions, Articles, Conjunctions and Tenses Q.6: Editing or Omission Q.7: Sentences reordering or Sentence transformation in context Section C: Literature Textbook and Extended Reading TextQ.8: 1 out of 2 extracts from prose/poetry/play for reference to the context. 4 Very Short Answer Questions. Q.9: 4 Short Answer type Questions from the Literature Reader to test local and global comprehension of about 30-40 words. Q.10: 1 out of 2 Long Answer type Questions to assess how the values inherent in the text have been brought out.
