CBSE Class 9 English has a slightly advanced level of the language than the previous classes. The annual examination is of 80 marks and the duration is three hours. Here is a pattern of the communicative English language paper.

Section A: Reading

This section has two reading passages:

Q.1: A Factual passage 300-350 words with 8 Very Short Answer Type Questions.

Q. 2: A Discursive passage of 350-400 words with 4 Short Answer Type Questions to judge inference building capacity, and 4 Very Short Answer Type Questions for vocabulary analysis.

Section B: Writing and Grammar

Q.3: Writing an article in about 100-120 words based on visual or verbal cue/s.

Q.4: Writing a short story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 200-250 words.

The Grammar syllabus includes the following areas in CBSE Class 9:

  1. Tenses
  2. Modals (have to/had to, must, should, need, ought to and their negative forms)
  3. Use of passive voice
  4. Subject-verb concord
  5. Reporting

○       Commands and requests

○       Statements

○       Questions

  1. Clauses

○       Noun clauses

○       Adverb clauses of condition and time

○       Relative clauses

  1. Determiners
  2. Prepositions

Above topics will be tested through test types as given below:

Q.5: Gap filling with 1/2 words to test Prepositions, Articles, Conjunctions and Tenses

Q.6: Editing or Omission

Q.7: Sentences reordering or Sentence transformation in context

Section C: Literature Textbook and Extended Reading Text

Q.8: 1 out of 2 extracts from prose/poetry/play for reference to the context. 4 Very Short Answer Questions.

Q.9: 4 Short Answer type Questions from the Literature Reader to test local and global comprehension of about 30-40 words.

Q.10: 1 out of 2 Long Answer type Questions to assess how the values inherent in the text have been brought out.

Q.11: 1 out of 2 very Long Answer Questions on theme, plot involving interpretation, inference and character sketch, in about 150-200 words.
