How To Treat Your Dandruff Problem In Dubai

It is a common problem but an embarrassing one. Dandruff leaves flakes on your shoulders and hair, and is immediately visible to the world. Try as you might, you can’t do anything about it – or can you?

What Is Dandruff?

Dandruff is nothing but visible flakes of skin on the scalp. It is shed as a normal part of skin exfoliation, and is comprised of nothing but dead skin cells. Dandruff is nature’s way of shedding the upper layer of the skin, as part of its natural cell renewal process. Everybody undergoes this process – but some experience more of it than others do.

If you notice excessive flakes in your hair, accompanied by itching and hair loss, then your dandruff is symptomatic of a deeper malaise within. If you have these symptoms, it just means that your dandruff problem has gone beyond what is considered normal.

Excess dandruff may most often be caused by the Malassezia fungus that normally lives on the scalp, but may overgrow for certain reasons. This happens when the fungus consumes the natural oils on the scalp to grow. This process further causes oleic acid present on the scalp to slough off more dead skin cells – resulting in visible dandruff flakes. It naturally follows that those with oily scalps are more vulnerable to the effects of itchy, scaly dandruff.

Those living in Dubai and the UAE often complain of developing a dandruff problem. They may already be susceptible to it, but the heat and humidity of the city certainly make the problem worse.

What Are Some Of The Common Causes?

The treatment for dandruff varies from person to person. It is a myth that dandruff is often caused by poor hygiene – however, not washing your hair about thrice a week can make the scalp greasy and dirty, thus creating a fertile habitat for dandruff.

However, dandruff may be caused by any of these factors:

  • A naturally oily scalp. This dandruff is normally itchy and the scalp can feel inflamed with frequent scratching.
  • Dry scalp and hair in the winter, exacerbated with using hot water to wash the hair. Dandruff caused by a dry scalp normally has small flakes and is not itchy.
  • Skin problems like seborrheic dermatitis, in which not just the scalp but also other parts of the skin become oily, greasy and scaly. Dandruff caused by this skin condition is yellowish or white in colour, instead of grey and translucent.
  • Other skin problems like scalp ringworm and contact dermatitis may cause severe itching on the scalp and scaly skin. In some cases, hair may begin to fall out and create bald patches on the scalp. Psoriasis and eczema also give rise to dandruff.
  • Stress, anxiety, mental health issues and taking certain antibiotics have also been linked with increased dandruff.

Take Professional Help When All Else Fails

You just know when your dandruff is normal and when it isn’t. Instead of wasting time with home remedies that might not work, it is better to consult with an expert dermatologist at a leading skin care clinic like Kaya in Dubai.

  • Most dandruff treatments in Dubai comprise of a thorough check of the scalp, whether there is accompanying hair loss, if there is an underlying medical issue causing the dandruff, etc. The good news is that most dandruff is resolved with the use of special shampoo aimed at correcting the skin imbalance and removing dandruff.
  • You can use shampoo prescribed by the dermatologist in accordance with the kind of dandruff and the reason for the same. Shampoos containing zinc pyrithione are most commonly prescribed – these show antifungal properties that help in curing ordinary and seborrheic dermatitis-dandruff.
  • Other shampoos contain substances like salicylic acid, ketoconazole or selenium sulphide. They perform various functions, like retarding the growth of dead skin cells, or killing the dandruff-causing fungus, or eliminating the scaly dandruff, etc. Do not buy dandruff treatment shampoo without a doctor’s prescription – what suits another person may not suit you.

Many dermatologists recommend applying cortisone creams on the scalp to cure dandruff. Whatever the dandruff treatment you adopt, you can get dandruff-free hair soon.
