Jazz fans are seen as friendly and emotional people with a limited sense of responsibility. Rap fans are seen as energetic and athletic. Classical music is associated with upper-class white people and rap for black people from lower-class backgrounds.
When the research was conducted, researchers asked respondents to regularly make the same assumptions about their personality, values, social class and even ethnicity, based on their musical preferences.
The research was led by Dr. Jason Rentfrow, from the University's Department of Social and Developmental Psychology and a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, is conducting research on the relationship between personality and musical tastes.
The results show that music is a form of social expression that can strengthen stereotypes and, potentially, trigger social prejudice. Many people use music as a symbol to convey their personality and values.
