The Link between Dairy Products and Prostate Cancer Risk

A recent review has warned that eating large quantities of dairy foods can increase the risk of prostate cancer in men. However, plant-based foods can significantly reduce the risk of the disease.

During a study;

  • Researchers collated findings from different studies to review existing data regarding the risks of prostate cancer.  The studies were about the prostate cancer risk and the association it has with goods such as milk, yogurt, eggs, gats, fish, calcium (in foods and supplements), vegetables, grains, fruits, legumes meat(white, red and processed), cheese, total dairy, butter, fats, and fish.
  • In several studies for vegan diets and legumes, the risks were lower. Vegetarian diets and vegetables recorded decreased risks too, while grains, fish, fruits, and white meat showed no effect.
  • An elevated risk was discovered for diets high in processed meats, eggs, red meat, fats, cheese, total dairy, butter, calcium, and fats.
  • In previous researches, the connection between prostate cancer and milk was attributed to a high intake of calcium, which probably changed the production of a certain type of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D helps to regulate cell proliferation and growth. Scientists believe that this can cause prostate cancer cells to grow undetected. This is yet to be studied to gather more evidence.
  • In other studies, there was substantial evidence showing that being obese or overweight and being tall are associated with a high risk of prostate cancer. The study observed that a high body mass index posed a risk for aggressive disease.

Although the study was concluded, more research is needed to prove these facts. If other important sources with quality data would be included, then the results would be conclusive. However, you should try your best to make sure your diet is balanced, with all minerals complementing each other.
