Facts About Burning Mouth Syndrome

Posted by Tsoralhealth on December 20th, 2019

BMS (Burning Mouth Syndrome) is a complex and painful condition that leads to a scalding, burning, or tingling sensation in the mouth that stays for months or even longer than that. An altered sensation of taste or a dry mouth is commonly experienced after the pain. This syndrome is the most common in adults of over sixty years of age, and five times more common in women compared to men. There are no specific tests for BMS and that makes it hard to come up with a burning mouth treatment course. There are no specific treatment which works for all. The doctors usually prescribe medicines for helping you to manage the dry mouth, pain, and other such symptoms.

The causes of burning mouth syndrome

There are two main kinds of burning mouth syndrome depending on the causes.

Primary BMS: Primary burning mouth syndrome is when BMS is not caused by any underlying medical problems. Experts opine that it is the damage to the nerves which control taste and pain that leads to Primary BMS.

Secondary BMS: Secondary burning mouth syndrome is when BMS is caused by any underlying medical problems. The symptoms in this case are relieved by the treatment of that medical problem. Secondary BMS might be caused by the following disorders.

  • Hormonal changes, like the ones associated with thyroid diseases and menopause
  • Metabolic disorders like diabetes mellitus
  • Allergies to certain dental materials having metal, dental products, and even some foods
  • Pre-existing dry mouth condition and the treatment options for it, like radiation therapy and medications prescribed
  • Medications for reducing blood pressure
  • Nutritional deficiencies like a low level of iron or vitamin B12
  • Oral infections like yeast infections
  • Acid refluxes

The symptoms of burning mouth syndrome

That scalding, tingling, and burning pain in the mouth is the most common symptom of BMS. People also feel a kind of numbness in the mouth. An altered sensation of taste or a dry mouth is commonly experienced after the pain. It usually affects your tongue, but the pain might also affect the roof of your mouth, your lips, or all throughout your mouth.

This pain lasts for a really long time, which is the main issue with this disorder. Patients feel the pain constantly for days all through a month or a week. There are others for whom the pain increases throughout the day and reduces only when they eat or drink something.
