Berry skin health carePosted by Rafik Ansari on December 21st, 2019 Vitiligo TreatmentVitiligo is relatively a common pigmentation disorder in which the skin's pigment-making cells (melanocytes) are lost or destroyed. As a result, well-defined white patches appear on the skin. Patches may occur on one section or all over the body and may join together. It occurs when pigment-producing cells die or stop functioning. Loss of skin colour can affect any part of the body, including the mouth, hair and eyes. It may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. The specific cause of vitiligo is not known. Many people with vitiligo also have a personal or family history of autoimmune disease, suggesting that vitiligo has an autoimmune cause. Autoimmune disorders are characterized by the body's immune system attacking its own tissue or cells, in this case, the melanocytes. Normally the immune system's white blood cells and antibodies help protect the body from harmful substances, called antigens, which may be derived from bacteria, viruses, toxins, or other sources. There are increasing reports that vitiligo can be caused by a trifecta of multiple factors : genetics, exposure to chemicals, oxidative stress, viral triggers, and stress. We have also seen hormone imbalances trigger vitiligo in practice. Approaching vitiligo with this whole-systems approach may ultimately be of more benefit than a single-treatment approach.
