Interesting Facts About Sphere in Maths

A sphere is a three-dimensional shape which is perfectly round in shape. It is similar to a circular ball. It is the three-dimensional form of a circle. All the points on the surface of the sphere are equidistant from the centre point. When a circle is rotated about one of its diameters, the shape is obtained. Since the shape is obtained from the rotation of a 2D shape circle, the properties of the sphere are similar to the properties of a circle.

A sphere has a relationship between many geometrical shapes, such as cylinder, cone, circle, etc. A sphere has a curved and total surface area. In general, all the three-dimensional shapes have the surface area and volume, whereas two-dimensional shapes have area and perimeter. The area of sphere is defined as the amount of region occupied by the surface of the sphere. Since a sphere is a 3D shape, the area represents the sphere’s surface area.  Here, we are going to have a look at some of the interesting facts about the sphere.

Now, let us discuss the facts of the sphere one by one.

  • The spherical shape is perfectly symmetrical about its centre

  • The points on the spherical surface are of equal distance from the centre point

  • The diameter of the sphere is twice the radius of the sphere

  • A sphere has no face, vertices, or edges

  • In Greek, they call the sphere as “sphaira”

Another interesting fact is, half of the sphere is called “Hemisphere”. When a sphere is divided into two halves about its diameter, a shape hemisphere is obtained. Let us take an example; our earth is a good example of a sphere. Our earth has two hemispheres, namely northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. As a hemisphere is the half of the sphere, the volume and the surface area of a hemisphere should be half of the volume and surface area of the sphere. Also, some of the properties of the sphere and hemisphere are related. Similar to a sphere, the diameter of the hemisphere is twice the radius of the hemisphere. Thus, all the geometrical shapes have many interesting facts, which are related in some way with other shapes.
