India is a country that is known for its colourful and dynamic culture. People of India have this wonderful ability to stay joyous and maintain a celebratory mood even during times of gloom. It is surprising for scholars from the Western world when they find Indians suffering from various problems and fighting numerous issues, yet singing, dancing and merry making during festivals. Indians are undoubtedly lovers of entertainment, especially the one that is presented in public. The country actually has a long tradition of public entertainment. Be it the mythological dramas and musical shows prevalent in the villages, or the mass appeal circus shows or cinemas, Indians love to entertain themselves.

However, when television was introduced to Indian society, there was a slight departure from the culture of mass entertainment. Indians were surprised to realize that entertainment could be private as well and could enter people’s bedrooms. However, this departure was not permanent. Within a few years, instead of a private corner of bedrooms, televisions started taking a prominent centre stage in living rooms. Today, Indians love to watch television with the whole family. So it is not surprising at all that every popular TV show in India targets the family audience.

Nevertheless, it is very difficult to thwart the forces of change. Since the last few years, Indian entertainment has started tilting towards personal engagement. This time, the change was brought in by the advent of digital technology and the spread of the internet. With the introduction of smartphones, entertainment shifted from the magnificent screens to the tiny glowing screen on your devices. More and more Indians are consuming mobile entertainment in the form of social media and video streaming. As a result, television channels are losing a huge market. They are no longer in competition with channels of other genres. This time, all television channels are collectively in competition with mobile entertainment.

The only way to emerge victorious from this competition is diversification. Indian television must start offering novel ideas and concepts to regain its audience. In this regard, Viacom 18 has started adopting certain strategies which seem to be working. The strategy is to penetrate the regional entertainment market. Since regional entertainment is still an untapped genre, the right way to compete with mobile entertainment would be to enrich that genre. This was quite evident when an impressive television audience was seen after the introduction of regional general entertainment channels such as Colors Marathi, Colors Kannada, Colors Odia and Colors Gujarati. People started migrating back to television to get a taste of regional entertainment.
