The Ebook Reader - Death Of The Paperback Book?

Posted by juliabennet on February 19th, 2012

Over the centuries, many new inventions have made old products obsolete and unnecessary. Electric bulbs made kerosene lamps obsolete, the tractor made the horse-drawn plough obsolete, and the pen made the quill obsolete. Many more examples can be cited of technology rendering a once-important industry obsolete. With the invention of the ebook reader, it seems that the paperback book industry might be the next industry to go. More and more consumers are choosing to purchase an e reader, and there are a great many advantages and conveniences to be had from it.

Probably the greatest advantage offered by an ebook reader is portability. While an e reader is probably about the same size and weight as a thin book, the fact that an ebook reader is able to store hundreds or even thousands of books on a single memory card means that you can carry that many books with you in that same form factor. If you need several books for different purposes, such as a textbook for school, fiction novel for leisure reading and a news magazine to stay current with world news, you can fit all of those onto a single device instead of having to carry three separate items.

Some people have criticized the ebook reader, saying that the selection of electronic books available for use on electronic readers is not as large as that with paperback books. With the growing number of consumers that own an e reader, however, this is quickly changing and many more electronic books are made available with each passing day.

Having an ebook reader also gains you access to a large library of free books. Many of the great classics have been around long enough that the original author’s copyrights have expired, meaning that they are part of the public domain, and can be copied and distributed completely free of charge. While you could never get someone to give away paperback books for free, with an e reader you will have access to all of these free books simply with a few clicks of your computer mouse.

Having an ebook reader also gives you instant access to the books that you want. With a regular paperback book, you would have to make a trip to the store to purchase it, or order it online and wait for it to be shipped to you. Electronic books, however, can be downloaded to your e reader the moment you purchase them, allowing you instant access to the books that you want.

Moreover, while physical books can be damaged or lost, electronic books cannot be damaged. Most online bookstores maintain a record of the books you have bought, and even if you lose the electronic file, you will still be able to download the same book without having to pay for it a second time.

All in all, having an e reader is a great convenience for many people and these readers are in the process of completely revolutionizing the way people read, probably making the paperback book obsolete in the process.

The ebook reader is the future of reading, so don’t get left behind. Get your very own e reader from mp3mp4players today!
