Is There Such a Thing as Construction Industry Stress?

Posted by New Foundation Counselling on December 26th, 2019

Construction is one of the biggest industries in the business world, and one of the most financially rewarding as well. While it is one of the jobs that pay well even if you only have a high school diploma, the risk factor is high, both physically and mentally. This is mainly because construction work deals with tight schedules, hazardous environments, and long hours in the job.

Several studies have found out that workers are also subjected to the pressure and anxiety outside of work hours. The work is really tiring and on a day to day basis, workers have to make sure that they’re on the best shape to render work the following day. By worrying too much, they find it hard to rest and recharge. Another alarming thing about this is that almost half of them don’t address the matter.

Thus, working in construction has known effects, not only on the body but on the mental health as well. If not managed, these effects will continue to put the worker’s overall well being at risk until it’s too late. It’s about time that safety programs should not only focus on physical dangers but also in construction industry stress as well.

What can the construction industry do?
The direction that the construction business owners and managers should take is to make sure that the interests of the workers should come first. Construction industry stress can be addressed by the following measures :

  • Manage stress levels

All jobs, regardless of the industry, have a certain level of stress. The right level of stress can help a worker maintain focus and productivity, but too much of it is dangerous to mental health. One of the ways to do this is to keep open communication about mental health across the organization.

  • Manage work schedule

Long hours of work doesn’t guarantee higher production. Construction companies must be open to flexible work hours so that their workers can have the opportunity to balance their time, have more time with their family, and to do other activities that can relieve their stress.

If the company will not be open to promoting stress relief, it can result in more pressured workers that can lead to lesser productivity.

  • Promote mental health

Promoting mental health across the organization will not only help reduce construction

industry stress, but this can also boost workers’ efficiency, focus, and production. The

A company can do this by conducting stress-relieving activities such as sports

tournaments, team bonding, and incentives.

The company can also conduct a regular psychological assessment of its employees

to help out those who need it.
