Bollywood is all about entertainment and fun. Well, most of Bollywood is. Though there are serious films with serious and sensitive subject matters, most films are made for entertainment purpose and are therefore all about having fun. Bollywood dancing is an inherent part of the films and attracts a large number of crowds to see the film. Sometimes even serious films contain song and dance sequences. One example of the last type would be Jai Ho from the film Slumdog millionaire. Though the film portrays the severe poverty stricken parts of the country, it ends with the hero and heroine gyrating to the typical item number.

Masala movies have been preferred by audiences than art films or parallel cinema. These masala movies contain a mix of all ingredients which are typical in the best loved Hindi flicks. There is mystery or romance, humor, and Bollywood dancing and singing. The songs to which these dances are performed are sung by renowned playback singers to which the actors and actresses sync their lips on the screen. Bollywood dancing incorporates various styles of dancing. It amalgamates both eastern and western forms like the kathak, bharatnatyam, hip hop, krumping, popping, and others.

Most actors and actresses are graceful dancers and are professionally trained. Be it Frieda Pinto in Jai Ho or Bipasha Basu and Neil Nitin Mukesh in Aa Dekhen Zara- the stars always manage to entrance audiences with their moves.  Nowadays, there is a trend of item numbers in which ace dancing stars feature as hot bombshells. They may or may not be part of the film’s narrative. Some common item numbers would include “Babuji zara dheere chalo”, “Munni badnaam”, Shiela ki jawani” and “Kajraare”. All these songs are played in discotheques and people love grooving to such music.

Some good dancers in the Mumbai based film industry are Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Govinda- among the actors. And among the actresses there is Madhuri Dixit, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Malaika Arora, and Katrina Kaif, to name a few. There are a few promising stars like Frieda Pinto of the ‘Jai Ho’ (Slumdog Millionaire) fame, and people are waiting with bated breath to catch their next flicks. Very often the fate of a film can be decided by the quality of the song and dance sequences it contains.
