Lung cancer affects both smokers and non-smokers. It occurs in people of 65 years and above. Most patients diagnosed with lung cancer do not survive for long. If detected early, the disease is curable.

Studies have observed that eating plant-based foods, including vegetables and fruits, can reduce one's risk for lung cancer. Eating a diet rich in minerals and vitamins can help you prevent chronic diseases, including lung cancer and heart disease.

Below are some of the foods that help in fighting lung cancer:

  • Turmeric – Turmeric is a spice commonly grown and used in Asia. It has been discovered to have curcumin, an active ingredient that can inhibit the invasiveness of the lung cancer cells. Turmeric is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat lung cancer
  • Tomatoes – Tomatoes contain a potent compound known as lycopene. This compound can fight cancer and reduce its risks too. It has anti-inflammatory properties that limit lung cancer progression.
  • Broccoli – Broccoli will not only help you prevent lung cancer, but also support the body’s immune system. This cruciferous vegetable assists in cleaning harmful bacteria. It also contains antioxidants that prevent lung cancer from spreading. The isothiocyanates in broccoli can lower the risk of cancer in smokers.
  • Green Tea – Green tea has compounds such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate and theaflavin, which contain anti-cancer properties. More research is required to help establish its potential to fight lung cancer.
  • Carrots – Carrots can protect you from lung cancer. According to a study, the antioxidants in carrots such as beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamin C, beta-cryptoxanthin, and alpha-carotene can reduce the risk of lung cancer in women.

Lung cancer is not easily detectable and can recur after treatment. It presents symptoms such as loss of appetite, chest pain, weight loss, persistent cough, and more. You can reduce its risks by consuming the foods listed above. Apart from diet, you could also take regular screening tests to help detect it early and get treatment on time.
