Everything You Need to Know About Accelerometers

Accelerometers are electro-mechanical devices fitted with the vibration sensors for motors and are used in sectors like aerospace industry, heavy machinery industry, automobiles, electronic devices, among others.

You can find these products in a high-sensitivity determining system like trains, airplanes, spacecraft, vehicles, water-ships, turbines, and more - wherever velocity and acceleration are the key factors of their functionality.

How does an accelerometer work?

One of two ways:

Piezoelectric Effect: In this type of accelerometers, a voltage is generated across the device due to the pressure exerted on the crystal particles by the accelerative forces, which could be static or dynamic.

Capacitance Change: Due to the accelerative force, the change caused in the position of the two structures leads to a capacitance imbalance that can be further used to generate a voltage of a device.

What are the types of accelerometers?

Accelerometers may vary according to their ability to produce low sensitivity or high sensitivity to measure vibration. Here are several:

Standard Accelerometers: They are compact in size and could be fitted easily on a system with top or side-exit connectors. They have stainless-steel housing and are suitable for all the rotating machinery applications.

Integral cable Accelerometer: A temperature-resistant cable is attached to the mini accelerometer that could be easily attached to the required system and sense the vibrations.

Compact Accelerometer: They are small in size and could be used in the systems like pumps, fans, and other machines that have rotating systems.

Dual Output Accelerometer: They have the 3-pin MS connector which is used to give dual output.

Biaxial/Triaxial Accelerometer: A kind of accelerometer that provides output in two or three orthogonal directions respectively. Used in cars or in any machinery related to displacement and movement.

Piezo Velocity Transducers: They give output in velocity instead of acceleration and can be used in a wide range of temperatures. When stress is applied to the structure,it shows the variations.

One more type:  Gearbox vibration sensors are used to increase the torque of a system thereby changing the speed of the motor and affecting the output capacity of the system. They come in different types and shapes, like helical or planetary gear. Depending upon their configuration, their application may vary. Some are used in rolling machines and elevators whereas planetary gears are used in lifts and automotive.
