FUNDAMENTALS TO BE KNOWN FOR A NEW CNC OPERATOR

Posted by Autolink on January 2nd, 2020

Nowadays manufacturing companies find it impossible in hiring fully qualified CNC machinists. Each new operator must be fully trained before operating the machine, because each machine tool is different and requires individual training to understand its operation. Some of the basics that each CNC machinist should know are:

  • Good understanding of the CNC software:

Different software is used when making a specific part for CNC that includes a CAD program with a CAM to generate the g – code. There is lots of software that we use; some of them are MeshCam, OneCnc, MasterCam, FeatureCam etc. You will not need all the software to get started, but understanding a lot more about the workflow helps in achieving a perfect finished part of the software level.

  • Basic measurements and measuring devices:

Each new operator must know about the basic measurements that are used. There are 2 types of measuring devices fixed and variable gages. They are used to measure one work piece attribute. Most commonly micrometers and callipers are used.

  • Blueprint reading:

Reading a blueprint accurately is quite important in the manufacturing industry. CNC machines use the information on the blueprint to shape and cut various types of materials including wood and plastic. A bit of experience in trial and error, you can be able to quickly read a blueprint.

  • Basic g-code knowledge:

G-code is a programming language that is used by CNC machines. Basic g-code level is necessary for two reasons, first is to work operating the machine by typing MDI commands or when you are trying to understand why your CAM software and machine are not communicating properly.
