My Learning Experiences in Healthcare Service

Posted by Kate Fox on January 9th, 2020

As a future healthcare worker, I had an opportunity to visit children`s assessment unit. It was a valuable experience for my future profession. I had a chance to learn a wide range of different medical conditions in practice. In addition, field learning was a good way to gain new knowledge from the patients and health service providers. The practice also showed that being a health care practitioner in the field of pediatrics is a very intensive work that requires great efforts. A physician in the sphere works at weekends and nighttime. At the same time, pediatrics is a rewarding sphere, because children recover from diseases quicker than adults do. Thus, it is impressive to see their health improved and see kids’ smiles again. The training also taught me that a college education is only 50% of success in the healthcare field. It proved the use of the skills I already have, and discovered ones I have to develop. During the next years of my education, I will pay more attention to the practical aspects. After I receive my degree in health service, I hope to work at an emergency department.

During the course of education, I learned that excessive pressure on oneself does not bear results. At the same time, health care professional need to improve regularly the professional skills and knowledge. From the article “Top 10 Challenges Facing Healthcare Workers”, I discovered that I will have to work overload, and will feel a lack of time with patients in the professional career. However, the main problem in my opinion will be the lack of training. I also learned that if something is unclear for me, I should ask about it at once. The reason is that later the misunderstanding may cause harm to the patient’s health or even life. In health care profession, it is better to ask ten times than to make one mistake. I understood that I should not be ashamed of making mistakes during the process of learning. Failure is a part of the learning process. For me this year was difficult and tough; nevertheless, I acquired valuable knowledge and skills that I will help during my entire health care career.
