NGO is a non-profit organization which works towards the betterment of society. It's a broad term. NGO's are organized on a local, national and international level to serve specific local and political issues. They can work to promote social or political change on a broad scale or very locally. NGOs play a critical part in development society, improving communities, and promoting citizen participation. Many NGOs in India are doing a great job in helping out the underprivileged kids with education and to bring about a social change. A company which is dedicated to evaluating the face of education celebrates these organizations which are working day in and out to provide every child with a chance to get an education and become educated.

Based on a Supreme Court Order about two years back, the CBI had started collecting data from the states on the number of NGOs registered with them. With several states not having submitted the data yet, and on the basis of available info, the number of NGOs in India is estimated to be between 3 to 3.6 million.

The first-ever exercise by the CBI to map registered NGOs has disclosed that India has at least 31 lakh NGOs — more than double the number of schools in the country, 250 times the number of government hospitals, one NGO for 400 people as against one policeman for 709 people.
