Alcohol and Hypertension

For years, if not decades, our Blood Pressure Support Reviewdiet has included a high proportion of saturated fat, sugar and sodium found in the processed and convenience foods that we eat on a daily basis. This type of diet causes a gradual build up of plaque in our arteries that slows down the blood flow and causes hypertension. If we want to lower our high blood pressure, we must change our diet.

We should adopt a healthy balanced diet that is rich in whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables but low in saturated fat, trans-fats and sodium. Try to eat a portion of oily fish and one portion of white fish a week. This will give us all the vitamins and minerals we need to help combat hypertension. A double benefit is that, combined with regular exercise, it can help us to lose weight thereby lowering our high blood pressure.

There is ample evidence demonstrating the link between drinking alcohol in large amounts and hypertension. This does not seem to happen if we drink alcohol in small amounts. In fact, drinking small amounts of alcohol may actually protect us against heart disease and stroke. Do not exceed the daily recommended limits otherwise we will lose any benefit there is.

The nicotine in cigarettes and other tobacco products makes our bodies release adrenaline. Adrenaline causes our blood vessels to constrict and our heart to beat faster, which raises our blood pressure. By quitting smoking we can lower our high blood pressure and significantly reduce our risk of heart disease and heart attack.
