Overview

The colon, also called the large bowel, is the last part of the intestine that opens into the rectum that connects the colon to the anus. When cancer begins in the colon, it is called Colon Cancer and when it starts in developing in the rectum, it is called Rectal Cancer.

Colon cancer occurs when some cells that line the colon begin to grow abnormally in an uncontrollable manner. The abnormal growth of cells leads to the formation of a cancerous tumor.

Colon cancer usually begins with the development of non-cancerous i.e. benign cells called adenomatous polyps some of which may become cancerous and cause colon cancer. The chance of polyps becoming cancerous depends on the type of polyps.

The three types of polyps are:

  • Adenomatous polyps i.e. adenomas
  • Hyperplastic polyps
  • Inflammatory polyps

Adenomatous polyps are considered a pre-cancerous stage of colon cancer. Whereas, Hyperplastic and Inflammatory polyps are more common but are not cancerous. The majority of the colon cancers are known to be Adenocarcinomas.

However, the other rare forms of colon cancers are:

  • Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (Gists) -  begin from specialized interstitial cells of Cajal in the walls of the colon
  • Carcinoid Tumors - begin from the specialized hormone-making cells in the intestine.
  • Sarcomas – Although very rare, start in the blood vessels, muscle layers or other connective tissues in the wall of the colon and rectum.
  • Lymphomas are cancers of the immune system cells

Treatment for colon cancer depends on the stage of colon cancer.

However, treatment options are:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Target Therapy
  • Immunotherapy

What are the Colon Cancer Symptoms and causes?

Symptoms of colon cancer include:

  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Feeling of incomplete bowel emptying after a bowel movement
  • Blood in feces that makes stools look black
  • Pain and bloating in the abdomen
  • Feeling of fullness in the abdomen, even  without eating
  • Lump in the abdomen or the back passage felt by your doctor
  • Unexplained iron deficiency in men or in women after menopause
  • fatigue or tiredness
  • unexplained weight loss

The exact cause of colon cancer is yet to be clearly established. However, researches indicate that changes in DNA may be responsible for the conversion of normal cells into cancerous cells. Many researchers have also found that mutations of the inherited genes that run in families can also increase the risk of colon cancer.

It has also been strongly suggested that the reduction of beneficial bacterial flora of colon may contribute to cancer development.

The factors that may increase the risk of development of colon cancer include:

  • Old age
  • Personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Inflammatory intestinal conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
  • Low-fiber, high-fat diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Previous cancers
  • African-American race has a greater risk of colon cancer than people of other races.

Besides the above, potential risk factors for colon cancer also include Diabetes, Obesity, Smoking, Alcohol consumption and previous Radiation therapy for cancer.
