Makara Sankranthi is an auspicious day called Uttarayan when the sun crosses the equator and enters the northern hemisphere astronomically. It has celestial importance. Sankranti is marked with the movement of the sun. Sankranti takes place when the sun moves into Capricorn and once entered it is called Makara.

 Sankranti is celebrated all over India with some regional variations. In Telangana, the festival is called Pongal and it is a four-day celebration. The first day is called Bhogi Pongal. On this day people throw away old clothes and things. The second day is the Makar Sankranti called Thai Pongal. Pongal is a sweet preparation made from the newly harvested crops and it is offered to the Sun-god at sunrise, as a prayer and thanksgiving for providing prosperity. The third day is called Mattu Pongal when people offer thanks to cattle which are the farmers’ companions. On this day the cattle are decorated, allowed to roam free and fed sweet rice and sugar cane. In some places, Jallikattu or wild bull-taming contest is organized. The fourth day of the festival is Kaanum Pongal. On this day people visit their relatives and friends to enjoy the festive season.
