Basics of Propylene Glycol and Vaping

Posted by River Supply on January 16th, 2020

Propylene Glycol or PG has a significant association with vaping juice. It is one of the ingredients of vape juice. It comes in a liquid state, and upon heating, the PG turns into vapors. Because of its property of vaporizing, PG gets used as the base liquid in e-juices. It is odorless, colorless, and has a sweet taste.

PG has a characteristic to keep things moist. Thus, vaping gives you a similar experience as to smoking. Vaping is less harmful than smoking. Therefore, it becomes easier for people who want to transition to vaping from smoking. When you purchase e-liquids from a reputable seller who has ties with genuine PG supplier, they will have a surreal vaping experience.

However, PG may cause allergic reactions to some people like throat irritation, headache, etc. If you are allergic to PG, then you can switch to e-juices that have vegetable glycerin (VG). It is thicker liquid than PD, and it changes the flavor of e-juice to some extent.

Is propylene glycol safe to use?

The short is a yes; PG is safe for use in vaping. PG is in the ingredients list of many pharmaceutical and cosmetic products for years. PG also has permission to get used as a food additive. Although PG has risks involved with lung damage, it is far less as compared to smoking a traditional cigarette or chewing tobacco.

Some manufacturers also use PEG, which is polyethylene glycol. It is slightly less toxic than PG; that’s why it gets primarily used in pharmaceutical. You can look for a sign of a PG supplier on the website where you purchase your e-juices. Or you can ask the store person if the base liquid is PEG or PG.

Nonetheless, a study conducted by ASPET in 1947 states that PG is harmless for use. They exposed animals to the vapors of PG, and later, animals got dissected after their death. The results showed that all body parts, including the kidney, liver, and bone marrow of the animals exposed to PG air, were completely normal.

So, PG is undoubtedly safe for use. But if you get a scratchy, irritated throat after vaping, then follow some precautions. You need to take breaks between vaping sessions and drink adequate water. Headache, nausea, and stomach can also be due to the side effects of quitting smoking and not because of PG.

To wrap it all up

Propylene Glycol is the base liquid used in vape juices. An e-juice ordered from a genuine PG supplier will be safe for vaping and won’t cause you any harm. You can vape liquids with VG as a base if you get an allergic reaction to PG. However, for most of the people, PG gives an enjoyable and safe vaping experience.
